Interview: Welcome to City Running Tours

CEO Michael Gazalah of Manhattan-based City Running Tours explains why exploring a city with the locals makes all the difference.

Magellan: City Running Tours is based in New York but offers personalized running tours in cities across the U.S. and in Toronto, Canada. Would you talk about where your big idea came from? About how you got started?

MG: Sure. I’m a chiropractor and I was working out of a Manhattan gym and I got a call from a friend about an Australian guy who was in town and looking for a running partner. My friend knew I was a runner who could match the guy’s pace and distance requirements. I thought it would be cool to run with him and show him around a bit, so I agreed to go. We clicked and a spark of an idea was born. That was 11 years ago.

Magellan: Do you have a “typical” client?

MG: Yes and no! We know that about a quarter of our clientele – and that number is growing – are returning business professionals, people who make regular visits to our cities. We have clients who run with us multiple times during extended stays. We also offer corporate and group events. We embrace a broad swath of competitive, recreational and social runners. We’re popular with families, whether the kids are running alongside or are tucked into strollers. And we attract slightly more women than men.

Magellan: What do you think your clients are looking for?

MG: That will vary depending on the client; people have different motivations. But we know a big driver for runners is the desire to keep on schedule, to maintain their training and mileage while they’re on the road. Running with a guide means committing to that schedule with ease – without the burden of planning – and being mentally free to simply enjoy the act of running. For many, running with a group or partner is a social experience with the added benefit of exploring unfamiliar parts of the city from a local perspective. For women wanting to run early in the mornings or after work, we offer not only ease, but security. The same for families. The commonality is that people are looking for a broader experience than running alone, which is our value-add. We stop, explore and chat according to the client’s wishes.

Magellan: What won’t you do?

MG: I can’t think of anything off the top of my head that we won’t do, but making smart choices is always the starting point. We tend to run off the beaten path and each run is tailored to the specific needs, wants and abilities of the client. So we’ll run in all kinds of weather but will be constantly assessing routes if temperature or conditions are extreme. For instance, running across the Brooklyn Bridge offers unique challenges due to its exposure to the elements, wind in particular. And running New York during a snowfall can be tricky, but, on the flip side, it possesses a charm because the city is so much quieter than normal. All of our guides are local runners so they know the ins and outs of each place; they know what’s possible and what’s not. Overall, exploring an urban environment means you’ll never know exactly what to expect, as each street and neighbourhood has quirks and tells a different story. That’s an intrinsic part of the journey.

Magellan: What do you like most about what you do?

MG: I like the whole adventure of it. I like showcasing our city to clients and sharing insider tips about New York. I especially like when they tell us that our tours have been the highlight of their trip – that is the highest compliment they can pay us.

Fairmont Kea Lani Maui

Maui is the second largest of the Hawaiian Islands at 730 square miles. It consists of two separate volcanoes and is referred to as “The Valley Isle” due to its deeply-cut canyons that create its scenic highs and lows. It’s green, lush and encircled by the stunning turquoise Pacific Ocean.

The recently-renovated Fairmont Kea Lani is nestled on 22 acres of tropical gardens on Maui’s south shore overlooking the white sands of Wailea’s Polo Beach. It is the only oceanfront all-suite and villa luxury resort in Hawaii. Beautiful pocket beaches stretch up and down this coast, providing excellent access to the south shore’s warm waters. These waters are intimately tied to the resort’s experience.

Fairmont Kea Lani Maui - Magellan Luxury Hotels

Jonelle Kamai knows a lot about these waters and their connection to the Native Hawaiian people. As the Learning and Cultural Coach at The Fairmont Kea Lani, Jonelle trains hotel staff in Hawaiian history, language and culture. As Chief Concierge, she also shares her knowledge with guests through the hotel’s authentic Hawaiian activities like the Hawaiian Canoe Experience, the Hawaiian Cultural Tour, the Hawaiian Culture Selfie Scavenger Hunt, and Olelo Hawai’i Language Sessions. On Saturdays, a Marine Expert from Maui’s Ocean Centre takes over, answering questions about life around and beneath the ocean. Be sure to ask about the thousands of humpback whales who overwinter (and give birth) just off Maui’s coast. Peak time is November through late February.

Inside the resort, water plays another role. The 9,000 sq. ft. in-house Willow Stream Spa was voted by TRAVEL + LEISURE World’s Best Hotel Spa – Hawaii in 2014 and 2015. The spa has fascinating amenities including a volcanic mud bar, heated stone benches, Hydro-Vichy shower, a wave table, and shower rooms that simulate a rainforest.

New this year, “Inspire Your Energy,” is a curated fitness and wellness program that connects guests to physical activities they are passionate about. The fitness center offers daily yoga, meditation, aqua fit and mind body barre classes. There are two lagoon-style pools for swimming and a full ocean activity program, including sailing, kayaking, stand-up paddling, snorkeling and scuba diving off Molokini, a crescent-shaped, partially-submerged volcanic crater three miles off the coast. Further south, Makena offers diving at Five Graves or Five Caves, or the Ahihi-Kinau Natural Area Reserve.

If hiking is your passion, have a picnic basket packed at the Caffe Ciao Deli and take a drive to Haleakala National Park (about 2 hours) or the ‘Iao Valley and Needle State Park (1 hour), which is surrounded on all sides by the Pu’u’ Kukui Crater. Regardless of where you end up on Maui, you will always return to the sea.

“Pau hana” translates to the time after work, a time for relaxation and informal socializing with friends and family. Bar LUANA offers a “Modern Pau Hana,” a place for drinks and an excellent opening to the rest of the evening.

And while there are a number of on-site dining options, including Ko and Nick’s Fishmarket Maui, the most intimate and elegant is the Hoku Lani, dining oceanfront “under the stars” with someone special. It offers a lavish four-course dinner illuminated by tiki torches and presented by private servers. The resort can arrange any additional requests such as flowers, musicians or whatever your heart desires, and Pacific Dream Photography is available to record your special moments.

What a romantic end to a really great day.

Get in the game at the Hawaii Bowl this Christmas Eve

How does Christmas Eve in Honolulu with 50,000 of your closest friends sound?

Every year since 2002, the NCAA football’s Hawaii Bowl has been played at Aloha Field, drawing piles of local football fans as well as those from across the US and beyond. And with the game nestled in next to the holidays, it’s the perfect opportunity to get away from colder temps and surround yourself with sun, sand, palm trees and maybe the occasional drink served in a pineapple.

While the game typically features the University of Hawaii team against one of its Mountain West Conference rivals, some years see two away teams make the trek to Honolulu for the Hawaii Bowl. Last year saw, for example, Houston’s Rice Owls football team squared off against the Fresno State Bulldogs in the Hawaii Bowl, with Rice coming out on top 30-6.

And since you’ll be in Hawaii over the holidays while everyone else is feeling chilled at home, be sure to make the most of your island vacation. Hawaii’s beaches are the stuff of legends – the clear blue water crashing on to the sand and the seemingly endless sun will almost make you forget it’s Santa season.

If you’re keen on a festive holiday dinner – be it of the traditional variety or something a little more of the regional/local variety, Hawaii’s eateries bring fresh, local ingredients to the table no matter what dishes you prefer.

With so many football fans descending upon Honolulu, booking a hotel on your own can be a bit tricky. Let Magellan Luxury Hotels find you the best four- or five-star hotel or resort in the area, set you up with exclusive perks, and get you the best prices on your stay.

A perfect day in Hawaii

Hawaii is an incredible place to get closer to nature – to explore the island’s rich culture, to unwind among the palm trees, and of course, enjoy the beach.

But with so much to see and do, it can be daunting to figure out the quintessential Hawaii experience. Here are four tips for making the most of your island stay.

Stay here — Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka’upulehu
Hawaii is picturesque pretty much no matter where you go, but it’s hard to imagine a spot that’s more breathtaking than the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka’upulehu. The 243 guest rooms and suites manage to meld seamlessly with the surrounding landscape while evoking a timeless elegance that’s quintessential Hawaii.

Eat here — Brown’s Beach House Restaurant
With the ocean just steps away, Brown’s Beach House Restaurant offers an intimate dining experience unlike many others. The AAA Four Diamond award-winner features gorgeous sunsets, tiki torches, and an inspired menu featuring fresh, seasonal ingredients from the garden, the sea and the land.

See this — Mountain Thunder Kona Coffee Tour
Of all the flavors of Hawaii, coffee is perhaps the most special. And with so many great stories behind the journey from the bean to the mug, Mountain Thunder’s organic coffee plantation is a must-see. The company offers an incredible tour of their facilities as well as a comprehensive demonstration of how coffee is made (including, off course, a tasting).

Explore here — Punalu’u Black Sand Beach
Hawaii is all about the beaches, and Punalu’u is easily one of the coolest. Located on the “Big Island,” it’s an ideal spot for catching some sun, exploring one of the hiking trails or enjoying a picnic lunch. Look for turtles relaxing on the beach’s legendary black sand, or hop in the water and do some snorkeling to get up close to other aquatic wildlife.
