Feeding Fido in Los Angeles

Although dogs have long been a common sight in the outdoor patios of restaurants around Los Angeles, it wasn’t until August of 2014 that the California Legislature passed a bill to make it legal, protecting business owners from potential lawsuits and patrons from tickets.

It is far from being as permissive as, say, France, where well-behaved dogs of all sizes are allowed in the main spaces of bars, cafes and restaurants. But the bill permits owners traveling with their pets to spend less time locked up their hotel rooms and more time out and about with their four-legged friends. With Southern California’s agreeable weather, hanging outside rather than inside is hardly a punishment.

Here are the ABC’s of eating with dogs in public:

A) The owner of the food facility must elect to allow pet dogs in its outdoor dining area. They are not obligated to allow pets; they are free to decide what works best for their business.
B) The pet dog must be on a leash or confined in a pet carrier and under the control of the pet dog owner.
C) Pet dogs are not allowed on chairs, benches, seats, or other fixtures.
D) There must be a separate outdoor entrance where pet dogs enter without going through the food establishment to reach the outdoor dining area.
E) The outdoor dining area must not be used for food or drink preparation or the storage of utensils, but a food employee may refill a beverage glass in the outdoor dining area from a pitcher or other container.
F) Food and water provided to pet dogs shall be in single-use disposable containers.
G) Food employees are prohibited from having direct contact with pet dogs while on duty. A food employee who does have that prohibited direct contact shall wash his or her hands immediately.
H) The outdoor dining area must be kept clean. Surfaces that have been contaminated by dog excrement or other bodily fluids shall be cleaned and sanitized.
I) The food facility owner ensures compliance with local ordinances related to sidewalks, public nuisance and sanitation.
Check with the concierge at your hotel for neighbourhood-specific restaurant suggestions.

LA County Fair incredible fun for everyone

For over 90 years, Pomona, California has been the home of the LA County Fair. Running from September 4-27, the LA County Fair is one of the oldest and largest of its kind in the US, attracting over 1 million people annually.

And while county fairs tend to have a decidedly agricultural emphasis the LA County Fair has moved away from livestock competitions and the like. If you’ve got kids, this is the place to bring them — the fair features a petting zoo, an outdoor miniature garden railroad, an underwater oceanic exhibition, a fully functioning farm and the America’s Kids Education Expo.

Oh, there’s also the midway, stocked with rides for kids of all shapes and sizes (including the grown-up ones). From the kiddie rides to roller coasters for braver types to the Ferris wheel for those wanting to see the fair from above, there’s a ride at the LA County Fair with your name on it.

The LA County Fair attracts an incredible lineup of musicians every year as well. Included in this year’s End of Summer Concert Series lineup are The Beach Boys, Chicago, Boz Scaggs, ZZ Top & Blackberry Smoke, Kool & the Gang, Train, Patti LaBelle & Chaka Khan, Lynyrd Skynyrd and more.

Speaking of music, the high school marching band parade competition is a great chance for young and old to watch Southern California kids march, play and show off in the hopes of winning the fair’s $10,000 grand prize.

Of course LA offers so much in the way of dining, shopping, entertainment and more. So if the LA County Fair really isn’t your thing, there are always plenty of options.

Santa Monica — on the pier and beyond

While you’d be hard-pressed to have a bad time in Santa Monica any time of the year, summer in this California beachfront city just can’t be beat.

Muscle Beach and the Santa Monica Pier are two of the city’s main attractions. With so much pristine sand and the incredible history and energy of the pier, it’s hard not to wander the boardwalk, check out the shops and rides and soak it all in.

From walking tours to the Heal the Bay marine-education center to bike and surf rental kiosks, double-decker bus sightseeing trips and more, Santa Monica Pier is the place to start your area adventure.

Venture beyond the Santa Monica Pier and you’ll find all sorts of things to see and do — especially if you need a break from the beach and the boardwalk.

Check out some guitars. Since 1958, McCabe’s Guitar Shop has been the place to buy acoustic/folk instruments, and has hosted performances by luminaries such as Tom Waits, Joni Mitchell, Beck, Linda Ronstadt and many more.

Take in some art. Hit Bergamot Station to see over two dozen art galleries presenting a wide range of styles and genres for all tastes. Originally a railroad car storage facility, the space has been transformed into a breathtaking art-lover’s paradise.

Go shopping. Third Street Promenade is an outdoor pedestrian-only shopping district located close to the ocean, and is home to some of the city’s best shopping, no matter what your style. There are street performers, incredible eateries, and an organic farmer’s market every Wednesday and Saturday.

Catch a flick. The Third Street Promenade is also home to over a dozen movie screens, with the Criterion Theater and Aero Theaters — both built in the 1930s – not far away.

Of course, Magellan Luxury Hotels will get you close to the Santa Monica Pier and the rest of the area attractions in the city’s best hotels at the best rates.

LA’s best brunches

In LA, dining is as much a social experience as it is a culinary one. The hottest eateries are places to see and be seen, where you can perhaps spot celebrities dining with celebrities, and much more.

But a few choice spots in LA still put food first, especially when it comes to that perfect weekend meal – brunch. Sure, there’s still plenty of people-watching to be done at these three spots, but for the best brunches in town the focus is on substance—with a healthy side order of style.

The Sycamore Kitchen

Back in the 1950s, the building that houses The Sycamore Kitchen was a print shop. While the eatery retains that vintage look and feel, the food created by Karen and Quinn Hatfield reflects the resurgent interest in the American diner—but with a modern twist. Brunch at The Sycamore Kitchen—dubbed best in the city by Time Out LA—features Stumptown coffee, incredible house-made pastries as well as new takes on classics: the breakfast sandwich, eggs Benedict, granola, pancakes and more.

Stir Market

This California take on the European food hall blends retail, dining and more under one roof. It’s ideal for brunch—there’s a European-style rotisserie, a salad station, artisan bakery as well as a full-service restaurant featuring mouth-watering brunch items. Grab something caffeinated from the espresso bar or go a little stronger with a beverage from the wine and craft beer bar.

Farm Shop

Beer, wine, cheeses, meats, bread, dairy, spices — for those looking for premium ingredients for making their own killer brunch (or other meal), this is the place to stop. But even the best culinary mind would be hard-pressed to match the caliber of the brunch items available to eat in. Inspired mains—frittatas, French toast, coddled eggs, salads, sandwiches and more—will satisfy every brunch-goer’s cravings.

Catching a home opener in America’s best ballparks

Spring — that time of the year when thoughts turn to infields, outfields, seventh-inning stretches, hotdogs and peanuts.

Baseball season is almost back—and it’s about time. Once the grapefruit leagues and spring training sessions are done, teams finally hit field for some real, honest-to-goodness baseball.

America’s baseball diamonds are as much a part of making memories as the action on the field. From coast to coast, here are a few of the country’s best stadiums, that just happen to be home to some of Major League Baseball’s best teams…

San Francisco — The San Francisco Giants continue to dominate Major League Baseball, and AT&T Park is as great a place as any to catch a game in America as you’ll find. Having just won the World Series, both in 2012 and 2014, you know you’re in for a treat on the field no matter who the Giants are facing. The team opens their season at home April 13 against the Colorado Rockies, the first of three against the nearby team.

New York — When it comes to iconic sports teams, few can touch the pedigree of the legendary New York Yankees. And as Major League ballparks go, there are few that can match the history and legacy of Yankee Stadium. Located in The Bronx, there’s a special kind of magic watching the Yankees take on opponents at home. This year’s home-opener opponent is the up-and-coming Toronto Blue Jays, who fly into town April 6 for the first of three games.

Los Angeles — Nestled in next to downtownL.A., Dodger Stadium has played host to the Los Angeles Dodgers for over 50 years. The Dodgers’ April 6 home opener sees them begin a three-game home stand against the San Diego Padres.

Of course, if you’re itching to see these teams in action in their respective stadiums and just can’t wait for an April home opener, be sure to check their spring-training schedules online – most play a handful of home games before the season officially begins.
