Feeding Fido in Los Angeles

Although dogs have long been a common sight in the outdoor patios of restaurants around Los Angeles, it wasn’t until August of 2014 that the California Legislature passed a bill to make it legal, protecting business owners from potential lawsuits and patrons from tickets.

It is far from being as permissive as, say, France, where well-behaved dogs of all sizes are allowed in the main spaces of bars, cafes and restaurants. But the bill permits owners traveling with their pets to spend less time locked up their hotel rooms and more time out and about with their four-legged friends. With Southern California’s agreeable weather, hanging outside rather than inside is hardly a punishment.

Here are the ABC’s of eating with dogs in public:

A) The owner of the food facility must elect to allow pet dogs in its outdoor dining area. They are not obligated to allow pets; they are free to decide what works best for their business.
B) The pet dog must be on a leash or confined in a pet carrier and under the control of the pet dog owner.
C) Pet dogs are not allowed on chairs, benches, seats, or other fixtures.
D) There must be a separate outdoor entrance where pet dogs enter without going through the food establishment to reach the outdoor dining area.
E) The outdoor dining area must not be used for food or drink preparation or the storage of utensils, but a food employee may refill a beverage glass in the outdoor dining area from a pitcher or other container.
F) Food and water provided to pet dogs shall be in single-use disposable containers.
G) Food employees are prohibited from having direct contact with pet dogs while on duty. A food employee who does have that prohibited direct contact shall wash his or her hands immediately.
H) The outdoor dining area must be kept clean. Surfaces that have been contaminated by dog excrement or other bodily fluids shall be cleaned and sanitized.
I) The food facility owner ensures compliance with local ordinances related to sidewalks, public nuisance and sanitation.
Check with the concierge at your hotel for neighbourhood-specific restaurant suggestions.

Marvelous Midtown Manhattan

Mention “midtown” to almost anyone and they’ll know exactly what you’re talking about – one of New York City’s most captivating areas.

The exact size of midtown Manhattan varies slightly based on who you talk to; broadly speaking it spans the entire island east to west, its northern border is 59th St. and it continues south for roughly 25 or so blocks.

There’s no question that Midtown Manhattan is one of the most vibrant hubs of… well, anything. It’s a burgeoning financial center, is home to some of the world’s most iconic skyscrapers, and includes most of the city’s best shopping, dining and entertainment.

Midtown Manhattan’s architecture alone is simply stunning. The Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, the United Nations headquarters, Times Square, Grand Central Station and more – they’re all here, and truly need to be seen in person. In fact, with the exception of Central Park and One World Trade Center, virtually all of Manhattan’s most iconic landmarks are in Midtown. Check out the legendary Park Ave., the bustling Madison Ave., Penn Station, Trump Tower, the Museum of Modern Art and so much more.

Want to shop? Fifth Avenue runs through Midtown Manhattan, offering the country’s best selection of boutique shops, department stores and much more. Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdale’s, Tiffany & Co. – they all emerged in Midtown Manhattan.

Want to catch a show? Broadway (and off-Broadway) theater is a truly special New York City tradition and culture that offers a chance to see established stars and the hottest up-and-comers cut their teeth on the stage.

For drinks, dining and dancing, the choices in Midtown Manhattan are virtually limitless. Whether you’re looking for cocktail lounges, nightclubs, white-tablecloth eateries or secret mom-and-pop spots, the choices are staggering.

Get into one of Midtown Manhattan’s fabulous buildings – specifically, one of the city’s fab four- or five-star accommodations – via Magellan Luxury Hotels.

The London Edition

Few hotels can offer elegance and grandeur while retaining a feeling of comfort and familiarity quite like the London EDITION. Located near London’s Soho district in super-cool Fitzrovia, this top-shelf hotel is the complete package.

The hotel’s location in Fitzrovia is key; in recent years the area has become London’s shopping, dining and cultural hub. Speaking of reservations, you’d best get one to Punch Room, a warm and inviting lounge reminiscent of London’s 19th-century private clubs. As the name indicates, the Punch Room features punch bowls as their signature drink among their stellar lineup of craft cocktails. Or change it up and hang out in the lobby bar – grab a coffee or cocktail, play some snooker or just watch worldly travelers go by.

Wine, food and fun in South Beach

Celebrating its 15th year, the Food Network & Cooking Channel South Beach Wine & Food Festival presented by FOOD & WINE –let’s just call it SOBEWFF for short – continues to bring incredible flavors and plenty of fun to Miami.

This year’s festivities take place from February 24 to 28 at venues throughout the area, and will highlight local ingredients, international cuisine, a flair for the culinary imagination, and plenty of wine.

The lineup of chefs for this year’s SOBEWFF is as strong (or stronger) than in any previous year. Among the notable culinary gurus are some of the food world’s rock stars – Aarón Sánchez, Giada De Laurentiis, Todd English, Tom Colicchio, Rachel Ray, Anne Burrell and many more.

Culinary themes this year, as in previous years, run the gamut – although this year some of the events look to be completely off the charts. From a vegan dinner to a “meatopia” event, chefs will be catering to every lifestyle and every palate, with casual events as well as fine dining experiences.

Learn from the pros in one of SOBEWFF’s many demos, workshops, grand tastings and seminars as they demonstrate how to take your culinary prowess to the next level. Or kick back and relax as these kitchen wizards conjure up some killer lunches, dinners, desserts and more.

The wine and drinks events will surely be as educational as they are fun (and tasty). Wine Spectator magazine is hosting a series of tastings, including a once-in-a-lifetime Heitz Wine Cellars legacy tasting. Put your taste buds to the test in a New World vs. Old World wine showdown, or take part in wine-and-food pairing events. Check out the Gekkeikan sake feature, which will help you learn everything you need to know about Japanese rice wine. Or if you want something more casual, check out Guy Fieri’s tiki cocktail showdown.

Magellan Luxury Hotels is able to get you into some of Miami’s best four- and five-star hotels, many of which boast some pretty spectacular dining and drinks options.

LA throws 2016’s first big art show

In late January, the Los Angeles Convention Center will be transformed into the venue for America’s longest-running forum to explore the work of the world’s leading modern and contemporary artists – the Los Angeles Art Show.

Running from January 27 to 31st, the show will more than ever be one of the best chances to discover the world’s most compelling artists of today. With over 200,000 square feet of exhibition space, last year alone the LA Art Show played host to over 50,000 visitors from around the world.

Going into its 21st year, the LA Art Show is returning with a fresh, refined focus that will help transform the show going forward. The show’s focus is narrowing to highlight only modern and contemporary works; traditional and historic contemporary art will be split off and viewable at the Los Angeles Fine Art Show.

This new focus will bring fresh energy to the convention center floor, offering more modern and contemporary galleries from around the world the chance to showcase new and emerging artists from every corner of the globe alongside the established greats.

Special installations at the forthcoming LA Art Show include exhibits devoted to Chinese and African contemporary art, a photo triptych panorama of a recent graffiti installation, and many more pieces and collections that will inspire and challenge visitors.

In your spare time explore nearby galleries, or take a break from art to enjoy some of LA’s best dining, nightclub and shopping options, all nearby the convention center. Or rent a car and venture beyond the city to experience California’s natural beauty.

Whether you’re an art lover, a gallery owner, an avid collector or just wanting to explore a number of different genres, the LA Art Show is for you. And Magellan Luxury Hotels can get you in at the best nearby four- and five-star at the best prices – and often with exclusive perks.
